Mining Consulting Services

The principals and the senior mining engineers of ATS have a combined total of nearly 200 years of experience in the bituminous coal mining industry. Most of this experience has been with operating companies and includes all facets of mining including management, operations, mining, environmental and civil engineering, planning and geology. ATS applies this experience and knowledge to each client's project and offers innovative solutions that are workable, thorough and well documented. Outlined below are selected Mining Consulting Services that ATS provides to its mining clients:

Due Diligence - ATS reviews the factors that can affect the viability of the subject property and/or operation in the detail necessary to allow the client to make an informed decision on the proposed acquisition, sale, merger or financing. Typically, a due-diligence review will inclue, but not necessarily be limited to:

  • Reserve Documentation Including Quantity, Quality & Mineability
  • Environmental & Permitting Status & Issues
  • Marketing Data Including Existing Coal Sales Agreements & Projected Sales
  • Projected Capital Requirements & Production Costs
  • Organization Capabilities & Experience
  • Post Mining Land Use
  • Land Development Potential
  • Proposed Legislation, Regulations, Environmental Issues That Could Affect The Subject Property
  • Evaluation of Historical Production, Quality & Costs

Feasibility Studies - ATS' feasibility study will be of sufficient detail to provide an economic evaluation of the proposed project to allow financial institutions and/or the client to make their investment decisions. These studies include reserve documentation, development plans, production projections, capital requirements and timing, operating cost projections, coal quality projections, marketing quantities, qualities and prices. Deliverables typically include a stand alone, bound report with geologic maps, facilities layouts, mining maps, detailed capital estimates, production schedules, sales forecasts and cash flow projections.

Reserve Studies - ATS will perform all of the work necessary to evaluate a reserve property. This include collection and assessment of all available geologic and property control data, and the preparation of a base map of the property. If additional data is needed for geologic and/or quality data, a program will be developed to acquire the needed data. ATS will then manage the exploration data, document the results and incoporate them into the evaluation. Deliverables include a description of the geology and the coal seams involved, a description of the mining geology, and maps describing the geology and quality of all the seams available for mining. Reserve estimates are then made by seam, type of mining contemplated and any other parameters important to the client.

Professional Opinions / Advice / Management Consulting - This work is typically done for operating companies, land companies, financial institutions and insurance companies, individuals or trusts. The work process begins with a meeting with the client to learn the case history and to determine the scope of the work. An initial review of the available data is followed by a field review of the operation or company. Key management personnel are interviewed and operations are observed and studied. Typically, findings are summarized and presented to the client verbally. These finding could include advice on alternative courses of action, ATS' opinion on the viability of the operation and additional detailed work on certain issues discovered in the initial review.

Operations Reviews / Optimization Studies - ATS will review a client's existing operations with a view toward identifying bottlenecks and comparing the client's performance with industry standards and/or competitors' performance for similar operations. The work begins with a review of unit performance data provided by the client or developing unit performance data for the client if it does not already exist. This is then followed up by field observations, management interviews and mini-feasibility studies. In the case of optimization studies, cash flow projections may be developed for alternative operating scenarios. Typical results will be recommendations for equipment changes, procedure changes and/or management changes as appropriate.
